Will the stamp look like the one on the home page? No! The drawing on the home page is simply a graphic to get you thinking. (Obviously we are not artists!)
What does the "00" in the stamp mean? If our postage stamp is issued, it will be at least three years in the future. "00" just means "the current First-Class rate on the date the stamp is issued." (That will probably be 43 cents or more.)
How can we get a higher-resolution picture of the stamp on the home page to use in a flyer or article? If you are using Internet Explorer, just put your cursor over this link, right click and choose "Save Target As." This will let you save the picture as a .tif file.
How does the United States Postal Service decide what stamps to issue? Basically, people write letters to the Postal Service suggesting stamp subjects. The Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) recommends which stamps should be printed. Please see our page on the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.
How long does it take to get a stamp made? At least three years from the time an idea is suggested, sometimes much longer. Sometimes it never happens.
Is there any guarantee that the CSAC will approve our requests for a school bus driver stamp? No. (As you know, the only thing our government guarantees is taxes!)
If our stamp is approved, who will draw the artwork? The Postal Service will hire an artist. In all probability, the artist will seek advice from the school bus organizations. On two occasions in the past, the USPS has held national contests among school children to draw stamps. It is theoretically possible the Postal Service might want to have students compete in drawing stamps to honor school bus drivers.
How Can I help? Send a letter or a postcard to the CSAC! Have your colleagues, friends and relatives write a letter. The more letters the CSAC receives, the better the chance for our stamp!
Do I have to use your form letter? Absolutely not! Feel free to write your own letter. Tell the CSAC how you feel. (We only provide the form letter because we know there are one or two people out there who don't like to write letters!)
Can I send a postcard instead of a letter? Sure.
Can our group start a petition and mail that in? Definitely.
Has there been a United States stamp in the past that honors school bus drivers? No. We went through all 575 pages of The Postal Service Guide to U.S. Stamps, 31st Edition. There have been stamps related to children, teachers and the trucking industry, even one about a school bus, but none on school bus drivers. We have reproduced some of the stamps we found. |
